Paris Is Burning is the groundbreaking 1990 documentary by Jennie Livingston that dives into the vibrant ballroom culture of New York City in the 1980s. This underground scene, primarily made up of Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities, was a space of radical self-expression, where participants created their own families, known as "houses," and competed in elaborate balls.
This film explores ballroom as both act of defiance and creativity, inspiring generations to embrace authenticity and create spaces of belonging. Discover the origins of voguing and the ways historical trailblazers challenged societal norms and expectations through their art form.
Stick around after the film for a social hour with discussion, cocktails and live performances.
**tickets purchases will be recorded by name and checked at the front door**
Each Wide Awake installment will feature a film screening, designated time for discussion, and a guest speaker or performer.
